Dr Piyali Chowdhury

Senior Scientist - Coastal Processes

Piyali works as a Senior Coastal Process Scientist at Cefas. She studies the impacts of climate change on our coasts using data driven methods. She has focused on identifying teleconnections that the global atmospheric phenomena have on regional coastal processes (waves and sediment transport). Her research also encompasses the response of local/regional coasts (processes) to future changes in wave climate under various climate scenarios (extreme events and sea level rise). She has experience in designing experiments including wave-structure modelling which is used for investigating tsunami wave induced debris-dam formation and interaction with coastal vegetation and/or infrastructure. Her current research is focused on reducing risk related to coastal hazards, improving early warning systems, propagation models, perception and preparedness of risk with the use of state-of-the-art digital technologies in different phases of coastal management.
