Andrew Joseph

MICROBIOLOGIST

Andrew is an early career Scientist with expertise in aquatic Microbiology. His current work area is in aquatic bacterial pathogens and surveillance of antimicrobial microbial resistance (AMR) in the aquatic environment. In relation to his work area, he is interested in understanding the dynamics and behaviours of resistance driving pollutants (i.e., heavy metals, biocides) in rivers, estuaries, and coastal waters and how they may cumulatively contribute to the emergence and spread of resistant bacteria/genes and impact on ecological health. Andrew has built extensive networks in West and East Africa pertaining to aquatic health. He has been leading technical support in Ghana for the Fleming fund programme, co-developing baseline AMR surveillance projects focusing on open water aquaculture production systems. He is also fulfilling a technical lead role within the Ocean Country Partnership Programme under the One Health Aquaculture assessment pillar and is interested in exploring how the One Health Aquaculture metrics can be interpreted and integrated into the strategic environmental assessment process for sustainable aquaculture development. Andrew is also undertaking post graduate studies in green economy at Bournemouth University and is interested in researching ways of mapping beneficiaries and losers of degradation of marine and coastal natural capital in multiuser environments.
