PRINCIPAL SCIENTIST, AND STRATEGIC LEAD FOR OFFSHORE AND MARINE RENEWABLE ENERGY (OMRE)

Dr Andrew B Gill, PhD FRSB, is a Principal Scientist, and the Strategic Lead for Offshore and Marine Renewable Energy (OMRE) at Cefas. Andrew is an applied fish/fisheries behavioural ecologist, who works with the Cefas Advice and Assessment group to support and develop the scientific evidence base. He joined Cefas in 2019, with 29 years of experience principally in the University sector. His current focus is leading the strategic development of OMRE activities and further developing Cefas-wide initiatives into the decarbonisation agenda. He has particular interest in the environmental effects and impact assessment of energy harnessing and transmission and more widely cumulative ecological impact assessment, ecological risk and uncertainty assessment environmental assessments and systems approaches. He is an internationally recognised expert in the environmental impacts of energy emissions on receptor species; principally electromagnetic fields, EMFs, and also underwater noise from subsea power transmission cables, fixed and floating offshore wind arrays and export cables, and other marine renewable energy devices. Andrew has many years of experience of animal behaviour laboratory and field studies using acoustic tagging and tracking of fish and invertebrate species in relation to ecological changes. He has led projects using methods to determine benthic an demersal community response associated with hard structures (wind turbine foundations and scour, cable protection), and methodologies for monitoring ecological change over different time and spatial scales. Research outputs are applied to marine spatial planning and co-location/co-existence. Andrew has chaired and served on many international committees and authored/co-authored numerous cross-disciplinary international journal articles, book chapters and scientific reports. He is co-Chair of ICES Working Group - Offshore Windfarm Developments and Fisheries (2020 - to date).
