Dr Julie Bremner
PRINCIPAL MARINE ECOLOGIST
Sustainable management of marine environments, co-use of marine spaces, fisheries sustainability, ecosystem functioning and services, mapping of coastal ecosystems, remote monitoring (remotely piloted aircraft, satellite, shallow-water imaging), machine learning for marine imagery, benthic ecology, biological traits. With nearly 20 years’ experience in marine ecology and ecosystems, Julie is Energy and Food Security lead at the Cefas/University of East Anglia Collaborative Centre for Sustainable Use of the Seas (CCSUS), an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the UEA School of Environmental Sciences and facilitates Cefas’ Coastal Ecosystems science topic. She assesses and predicts the effects of human activities on marine biodiversity and ecosystem function, spanning most recently fishing, wind energy, nuclear energy and pollution. She researches seabed ecosystems, innovative methods of coastal monitoring, physics/ecology coupling and ecology to support environmental economics and social needs.
Julie is a scientific advisor to UK/overseas governments and industry and develops science strategy and research in coastal ecology and fisheries. She is an international keynote speaker, external reviewer for international funding schemes, PhD supervisor and examiner, scientific mentor and has a network in 25 countries. She sits on the steering committee of the ESPRC AgriFoRwArdS Centre for Doctoral Training, reviewed proposals and recruited students for the NERC EnvEast Doctoral Training Partnership and has sat on ICES WG/WKs. Her work is funded by Defra, UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, UKRI (NERC, GCRF), EU and industry. She works with a range of collaborators including physical scientists and chemists, computing scientists, social scientists, environmental economists, industry specialists and policymakers. Julie was educated at Napier University Edinburgh, the University of York and the University of Newcastle upon Tyne (PhD, 2005).
