Dr Paul Whomersley

INTERNATIONAL MARINE ADVISOR

Paul is an experienced Marine Scientist who has specialised in marine monitoring and conservation for over 23 years. Paul is the current chair of the Premiam Monitoring and Coordination Cell (PMCC), which is responsible for marine emergency response and monitoring within the UK. As a Cefas Principal Scientist, Paul leads the Global Ocean Wildlife Analysis Network (GOWAN), which has established a network of stereo Baited Remote Underwater Video Camera systems (BRUVS) across over 16 countries. Paul, as part of the UK Governments Blue Belt Programme, is the Overseas Territory lead for Ascension Island and provides advice and expertise to UK Overseas Territories in relation to the management, protection and conservation of their marine estates. Paul also works closely with other UK organisations, primarily the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) and the Marine Management Organisation (MMO), which through the Ocean Countries Partnership Programme (OCPP) delivers advice on the development of marine management and monitoring strategies directly to Government Ministries and Agencies of member countries. Paul, as lead editor recently published a Frontiers in Marine Science Research Topic which focussed on the importance of the development of evidence informed marine management and protection strategies.
