Jacqueline Eggleton

SENIOR BENTHIC ECOLOGIST

Jackie is a senior benthic ecologist and group manager for the Ecology Group with 20+ years experience in assessing the impacts of human activities on marine benthic communities. Over the last 10 years she has developed an extensive database of benthic biological traits, using this information to assess the functional health of the Greater North Sea in support of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) descriptor D6: Seabed Integrity, and to understand the links between demersal fish and benthos in the presence and absence of fishing pressure. In addition, she has used her taxonomic identification, offshore benthic sampling and scientific report writing skills to provide evidence of the current state of the marine benthic environment within the wider UK continental shelf and more specific areas such as Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). Since 2005, she has been providing expert technical advice to UK government on offshore wind farm developments and their potential impacts on benthic communities. More recently, Jackie is supporting the FCDO and Defra in an advisory capacity on the production of robust deep seabed mining regulations and associated standards and guidelines. Her role involves the transfer of the UK’s knowledge, experience and expertise in the implementation of regulations and scientific advice pertaining to the continental shelf to the deep sea environment.
