Rachel Hartnell

Science Director

Rachel has 20 years’ experience in applied bacteriological and virological research. After carrying out a PhD and several post docs at the Institute of Aquaculture, University of Stirling on bacterial fish diseases she joined Cefas in 2000 to work on Food Standards Agency supported projects in the area of bacteriological contamination of bivalve molluscs. Since then she has been involved in many international research programmes in the Food Safety area. In 2005 she took on the role of the coordinator of the European Reference Laboratory for monitoring bacteriological and viral contamination of bivalve molluscs. In 2015, on the retirement of the incumbent, Rachel became the Divisional Director of Aquatic Health and Hygiene, a role that enables her to combine her fish disease and food safety backgrounds.
