A feed-back control law to stabilize fisheries

This study describes the results of an application of control engineering methodology to the problems of regulating fisheries. A novel feed-back control law is developed which minimizes fluctuations in catch and in effort for a multi-age-group stock with variable recruitment and with imprecise estimates of stock size. The control law is successfully applied to simulations of management of the western stock of mackerel, and the usefulness of the control engineering approach is demonstrated.
