Can stocks be enhanced by hatchery fish?

The question of whether natural fish stocks can be enhanced by liberating hatchery-reared fish into the sea is attracting considerable interest throughout the world. Atlantic salmon, Pacific salmon, Japanese red seabream and cod all figure in substantial research programs aimed at evaluating this concept.
