Publication Abstract

Uptake and clearance of ovine prolactin in rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss

D.M. Power

Breakdown and clearance of ovine prolactin (oPRL) administered by intravenous, intraperitoneal or intramuscular injection were studied in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) using a radioimmunoassay. The rate of hormone uptake into the circulation and the duration of peak circulating concentrations were influenced by the route of administration. Disappearance of intravenously injected oPRL from plasma followed single order kinetics and was exponential. The half-lives of oPRL, after intravenous, intraperitoneal or intramuscular administration were 6.7, 10.6 and 12.5 hr, respectively. No significant difference was observed in the rate of clearance of the hormone of fish maintained in fresh or salt water (25 ppt).
