Current approaches to the study of pollution-related diseases in fish

D. Bucke

The problems involved in the investigation of relationships between the occurrence of fish diseases and pollutants are known to be complex. Methods for describing the pathological characteristics of these diseases have had to become more objective in approach because of misinterpretation in the past.

In this paper, details are given for standardisa-tion of methodologies for sampling and recording gross diseases for monitoring purposes in wild stocks of fish. Furthermore, a selection of approaches for studying the characterisation and pa-thogenesis of both clinical and sub-clinical diseases are reviewed. These include state of the art pathobiological methods involving studies both at the organ and cellular levels, as well as methods for diagnosing neoplastic diseases. It is concluded that, for multivariant investigations, a collaborative approach between scientists is needed to tackle this international problem.
