A proposed digital atlas of the resources of the North sea and its potential value in planning

The development of marine resource atlases world-wide over the last 10 years is described, and examples provided of the use to which they have been, are being and might be put in the planning process. The evaluation of demonstration floppy disks of a computerised atlas of the seas around the UK is compared with a North American program based on a slightly different conceptual framework, but with the same overall aim. The next steps in the UK project, and possible links with similar exercises being carried out in other countries bordering the North Sea, are discussed.
