Sexually mature, male Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar, parr frequently occur under natural conditions in a number of river systems in the northern hemisphere. However, reports of female Atlantic salmon from anadromous populations maturing sexually during the initial freshwater stage of the life cycle are rare, with only a single confirmed occurrence from a British river. The authors report the occurrence of a sexually mature female Atlantic salmon smolt from the River Avon in southern England. Genetic analysis demonstrated that the smolt was an Atlantic salmon rather than a migratory trout, Salmo trutta, or a hybrid.
