Predation on Benthosema glaciale (Myctophidae) by spawning mackerel (Scomber scombrus)

M. Greer Walker and J.H. Nichols

The Western mackerel, Scomber scombrus L., spawns along the edge of the European continental shelf between 46 and 54°N during the months of April through to July. During this period the diet was thought to consist of planktonic organisms particularly small crustaceans (Lockwood, 1988). However, it is now evident that mackerel can also feed on myctophids on the shelf edge during spawning.
