Barbel from a river in S. England were examined for the presence of epidermal hyperplasia and papilloma. A total of 22% of fish examined were affected. Biopsies of lesions were examined by light and electron microscopy and revealed the involvement of two cell types with differing staining characteristics. The aetiology of the lesions remains undetermined.
