A simple method to identify triploid molluscan bivalves by the measurement of cell nucleus diameter

A.R. Child and H.P. Watkins

Previously described methods for the detection of triploid bivalves have used either chromosome counting techniques, flow cytometry or microfluorometry. Measurements of the diameter of gill tissue and haemolymph cell nuclei showed that it was possible to distinguish between diploid and triploid Manila clams. This simple technique has considerable advantages in that it can be carried out using a high power microscope and basic microbiological equipment. It is cheap and can be applied quickly with minimal training in microbiological techniques.
