Ovulated female salmo (Salmosalar) urine contains at least one compound which elevates plasma 17,20 beta Pconcentrations in conspecific male parr. In an attempt to try and identify thecompound(s), we tested a variety of hormones or hormone metabolites which are known to bepotent olfactory stimulants to mature males. Waterborne testosterone and 17,20 beta P-Shad no effect on plasma 17,20 beta P concentration in males, whereas prostaglandins F1α and F1α whenadded to the holding water caused an elevation in male parr plasma 17,20 beta P levels. This effect increased as the season progressed.
