Publication Abstract

F-series prostaglandins have apheromonal priming effect on mature male Atlantic salmon parr

C.P. Waring and A. Moore

Ovulated female salmo (Salmosalar) urine contains at least one compound which elevates plasma 17,20 beta Pconcentrations in conspecific male parr. In an attempt to try and identify thecompound(s), we tested a variety of hormones or hormone metabolites which are known to bepotent olfactory stimulants to mature males. Waterborne testosterone and 17,20 beta P-Shad no effect on plasma 17,20 beta P concentration in males, whereas prostaglandins F and F whenadded to the holding water caused an elevation in male parr plasma 17,20 beta P levels. This effect increased as the season progressed.
