Fifty 2-year old rainbow trout were screened for thepresence of infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV), for 1PNV neutralisingantibody and for IPNV binding antibody (as determined by an enzyme-linkedimmunosorbent assay) to determine whether presence of antibody correlatedwith presence of virus, for use in a broodstock management scheme. Althoughboth virus and specific antibody were found in some of the 50 fish, noneof the antibody-positive fish had de-tectable virus. The antibody screeningmethod is a suitable method for identifying a fish population that hasbeen exposed to IPNV, but is not a consistent predictor of current presenceof the virus in individual fish.
