Assessment and management techniquesfor migratory annual squid stocks: the Illex argentinus fishery in the SouthwestAtlantic as an example

M. Basson, J.R. Beddington, J.A. Crombie, S.J. Holden, L.V. Purchase and G.A. Tingley Assessment methodology for squid fisheries ispresented, extending previous work by considering migration between adjacent fishinggrounds. The methods are based on standard Leslie-Delury analysis but make differentassumptions about stock movement and the relation between stock abundance and catch perunit effort.

The new methodology is applied to data fromthe lllex argentinus fishery in the Southwest Atlantic, south of 45°S.Retrospective assessments for the 1987-1991 fishing seasons are presented, focusing onestimates of recruitment and spawning biomass.

Management of the fishery around theFalkland Islands is based on effort control. The objective is to maintain the spawningbiomass above a threshold level, thus avoiding high probabilities of low recruitment inthe following season. The estimates of spawning biomass and recruitment from the analysesare used to estimate an appropriate threshold level of spawning biomass.
