Background evidence for environmental effects of endocrine disruptors

P. Matthiessen

This paper describes the main types of environmental endocrine disruption, and illustrates the issue by recounting two case histories: the oestrogenic effects of certain discharges on fish, and the androgenic effects of tributyltin on molluscs. It concludes that while more research is required to make firm predictions of the population-level consequences of endocrine disruption, and to develop effective hazard identification tests for these substances, it would be prudent to begin making voluntary regulatory controls where possible in view of their undoubted potential for environmental damage.
