Early life stages of farmed fish

B.R. Howell, O.J. Day, T. Ellis and S.M. Baynes

This chapter focuses on aspects of biology that are of particular importance in the context of cultivation and includes sections on development, nutrition, behaviour and environmental effects. The final section concerns the effect of rearing procedures on the characteristics of fish. This is a subject that has assumed increasing importance with the growing realisation that securing survival through the early developmental stages is merely the first obstacle that has to be overcome and that the quality of reared juveniles may have a significant economic impact on subsequent farming practices.
