A review is presented on techniques to bring adult scallops, Pecten maximus L., into spawning condition in a hatchery environment. The importance of food quantity and quality for the production and viability (in terms of numbers developing into D-larvae) of scallop eggs and larvae is stressed, in particular the essential fatty acid composition of the microalgae diets. Techniques for the hatchery conditioning of P. maximus are discussed in relation to those for other pectinid species.
