Setting performance targets for analytical accuracy

M.D. Nicholson and B. Jones

This paper discusses how to set suitable targets for analytical accuracy. The effect of analytical variability will be to reduce the ability of monitoring programmes to detect signals in the environment. Hence analytical targets can be related to simple monitoring objectives such as estimating the mean level at a site or detecting a long-term temporal trend. Theoretical results are
presented and demonstrated using data collected to monitor levels of mercury in marine organisms.
