Lobster (Homarus gammarus) stock enhancement investigations in the United Kingdom from 1983 to 1993

J.F. Wickins

The feasibility of supplementing natural European lobster (Homarus gammarus) stocks with hatchery reared juveniles was examined in Britain during the period 1983 to 1993 at Bridlington Bay, on the English east coast. This report summarizes the video record of that study shown at the 1997 Workshop on Lobster Stock Enhancement, Magdalen Islands, Quebec, Canada, 29-31 October 1997. The video was produced to provide easily understood, qualitative support for a more quantitative technical report describing the techniques developed for rearing, tagging, transportation and release of lobsters. Additionally, it illustrated the quayside monitoring and tag reading processes used in these and other British lobster stock enhancement trials. Most lobster hatcheries and nurseries have experienced considerable unpredictable variability in survival at one time or another. Research at the Conwy Laboratory has increased understanding of some of the underlying causes and provided methods for their solution.
