Marine and coastal zone geographic information: Mapping the future of the UK
F.L. Franklin and V.L. Hurrell
This paper presents an overview of the current provision for coastal and marine geographic information in the UK and looks towards how this will be carried forward into the next millennium. It draws on the findings of a recent workshop hosted by CEFAS entitled `Integrated mapping of the UK marine and coastal zone - the way forward'. The key findings of this workshop were that within coastal and marine mapping there are clear requirements for a concerted approach, better access to information, establishing core data sets, identifying research needs and taking action. Some of these criteria have already been addressed by existing projects. However, there is still a clear need for a proactive approach in order to fulfil the conclusions of the workshop, which were to:
- raise the profile
- invest to save establish a co-ordination mechanism
- provide better access to information
- establish core data sets
- carry out appropriate research
These conclusions consolidate many of the findings of prior reports such as the EU Demonstration Programme on Integrated Management in Coastal Zones and the Greenwich Project.
