K.L. Denham and J. Long

During the course of a monitoring programme on the health status of wild fish undertaken by the MAFF Fish Diseases Laboratory, grayling Thymallus thymalrom six rivers were found to be infected by a gyrodactylid identified as Gyrodactylus thymalli. This is the first recorded occurrence of G.thymalli in the British Isles. The host specificity and morphological characteristics of G. thymalli are compared with other species of gyrodactylid found during the monitoring programme, and the difficulty of discriminating G.thymalli from G.salaris is discussed.
