Actinides in the Irish Sea

D.S. Woodhead

This editorial introduces a JER Special Issue which covers radioisotopes of the actinide elements which have been discharged into the northeast Irish Sea under authorization since 1952. This has been mainly from the nuclear fuel reprocessing plant at Sellafield (Windscale) with smaller contributions from the nuclear fuel fabrication plant at Springfields, and from other sites. It is the purpose of this Special Issue to provide a summary of current knowledge on the behaviour, distribution and radiological significance of the past and present inputs of the transuranic radionuclides to the Irish Sea and, perhaps as importantly, attempt to indicate future developments in each of these areas.
