The fishing mortality which results instock collapse is difficult to ascertain. As a proxy, an estimate of the fishing mortalitywhere the equilibrium spawning stock is zero has been defined previously as thereplacement line which corresponds to the lowest observed spawning stock. A number ofproblems of estimation are raised in the calculation of the uncertainty associated withthe slope of this line and these are discussed in this note.
