Use of chemicals and medicines in aquaculture

The range of chemicals used in aquaculture is wide and the range of reasons for chemical use equally wide. The types of chemicals used and the needs for their use are discussed in this review in relation to the major usage types - structural, feed related, hygienic and medicinal. Some, particularly structural materials, are an inseparable part of a farm's physical structure others enable the reduction of environmental impact of aquaculture to be improved - e.g. improved low residue feeds. Chemicals for hygiene and disease control such as antimicrobial agents are equally essential for the sustainability of aquaculture. Some of the conflicts involved in their use is discussed is considered, alternative approaches are presented and the reasons why such chemicals will remain at least as an essential emergency reserve for aquaculture and for animal welfare in aquaculture are discussed.
