Myxosporidiosis of fish and the bryozoan link with proliferative kidney disease (PKD) of salmonids

S.W. Feist and M. Longshaw

This paper provides a brief review of the Myxosporidea as agents of fish diseaseand gives examples of their impact on wild and cultivated fish species. In particular, the effects of proliferative kidney disease (PKD) on salmonids and myzosporidiosis of cyprinids are described. Information on developments in the understanding of the life cycle requirements of these parasites is also provided, with emphasis on the recent breakthrough of the recognition of Bryozoa as hosts of Tetracapsula bryosalmonae, the causative agent of PKD
