Quality Status Report for the Irish Sea and Bristol Channel

CEFAS authors

At the 1992 Ministerial meeting of the Oslo and Paris Commission Ministers agreed to establish a programme for a quality assessment of the OSPAR Convention maritime area, the North-east Atlantic. The Commissions committed themselves to work towards a quality assessment of the whole maritime area by the year 2000. In 1994, the North-east Atlantic was divided into five regions: Region I (Arctic Waters), Region II (Greater North Sea), Region III (The Celtic Seas), Region IV (Bay of Biscay and Iberian Coast) and Region V (Wider Atlantic). An assessment is being undertaken for each of these regions and all five reports will then be combined to produce an assessment for the whole of the North-east Atlantic. The assessment of Region III is the joint responsibility of the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. As an initial stage in the preparations, sub-regional reports have been produced for the Irish Sea and Bristol Channel, the Malin Sea and the Celtic Sea.
