Viruses and bivalve shellfish

Bivalve molluscs are a type of shellfish that have two shell halves which hinge together. Species commonly commercially exploited in Europe include the native or flat oyster (Ostrea edulis), pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas), common blue mussel (Mytilus edulis) and Mediterranean blue mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis), cockles (Cerastoderma edule), king scallops (Pecten maximus) and queen scallops (Chlamys opercularis), and various clams including the native clam or palourde (Tapes descussatus), the hard shell clam (Mercenaria mercenaria), the manila clam (Tapes philippinarum), and the razor shell clam (Ensis spp.).
