Revisiting the influences of parent stock, temperature, and predation on the recruitment of the Northeast Arctic cod stock, 1930-1990
Publication Abstract

Nilssen et al, 1994 revisited: a consideration of the influences of parent stock, temperature and predation on the recruitment of North east Arctic cod stock from the 1930s to the present

J.G. Pope, P. Large and T. Jakobsen

Virtual population analyses are extended back to the early 1930s for the North East Arctic cod stock and the additional data set critically reviewed. The extended time series of population abundance at age are used to reconsider the parent stock, temperature and pre dation relationships described in Nilssen et al 1994. The new data broadly confirms the earlier findings but it is necessary to use a cannibalistic version ofthe VPA in order to clarify theissues. In the light ofthese results models are also developed to investigate the response ofthe stockto various fishing regimes and to suggest optimal fishing strategies.
