Whither marine radioactivity studies?

D.S. Woodhead

Give or take a year or two, our passage into the third millennium will also take us into the second century of the study of environmental radioactivity. Of course, such time points are quite irrelevant to the actual growth (or decline!!) of interest in the subject - as an example, the real explosions, literal and metaphorical, occurred in the middle decades of the last century - they merely provide an excuse for some misty-eyed reminiscences about the past when everything was allegedly better than now, and/or an ill-advised peek into a future for which all present comments and predictions will assuredly be found to be awry. That said, I have been pressured into offering some thoughts on the status of our subject, but will confine myself to the more restricted area of marine radioactivity that has been one of my major interests.
