Stocking density has been highlighted as a key husbandry factor with the potential to affect fish welfare. However, the issues surrounding stocking density are complex and poorly understood. Here we use rainbow trout as an example to review effects of increasing density and discuss implications for welfare, Rainbow trout is an ideal case study species because there is a large number (43) of published density studies and the species has been used widely as a "lab rat" in physiology and behaviour experiments.
