Four CEFAS scientists, each with differing backgrounds, research interests and expertise form their organisation’s recently established Proteomics Technology Evaluation Committee (PROTECT). CEFAS is a scientific research and advisory centre for fisheries management and environmental protection and is an agency of the UK Government’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). The agency provides contract research, consultancy, advice and training in fisheries science and management, marine environmental protection and, aquaculture to a large number of public and private sector clients around the world. Across three laboratories, CEFAS scientists specialise in marine and freshwater ecotoxicology, fish and shellfish disease diagnosis including virology, bacteriology, parasitology, pathology, and histology, contaminant analysis and biological fate and effects of environmental contamination. The remit of PROTECT is to assess the current and future potential of technologies associated with protein expression and its application to the type of work performed within the organisation. The visit to the Proteomics Visitor Centre (PVC) at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Heidelberg was the first phase of a longer-term, fact-finding mission whereby members of the committee will visit academic institutions, proteomic facilities and other laboratories conducting research in this field. Throughout the period of evaluation, they will acquire the understanding and training to enable them to make objective decisions as to the potential use of proteomics in the current and future portfolio of the research performed throughout CEFAS.
