The influence on stock assessment advice of sampling error in research survey and international market sampling data for North Sea cod (Gadus morhua L.) and plaice (Pleuronectes platessa L.)

The influence of sampling error in both commercial and research vessel data when computing statistics used to provide scientific advice are evaluated and compared for North Sea cod (Gadus morhua L.) and plaice (Pleuronectes platessa L.). Statistics of interest are perceived recruitment, spawning stock biomass, fishing mortality, estimates of biological reference points and TACs. Errors in the estimated numbers-at-age of the landed catch, obtained from market sampling, were investigated under the EU-funded study (EMAS - CFP Study Project 98/075) and previously reported (ICES 2001 CM/P:13 and ICES CM 2001/P:14); whilst sampling error in the indices of numbers-at-age obtained from research vessel surveys were investigated under the EU-funded study (EVARES - FISH/2001/02 - Lot 1). The results of these studies were combined to generate 500 realisations of the international numbers-at-age and mean weights-at-age in the landed catch and indices of numbers-at-age for the period 1991 to 1998. These were then used to produce 500 stock assessments, including estimation of reference points and stock projections conditional on the XSA (Extended Survivors Analysis) model as implemented in 1999 at the ICES Working Group on the Assessment of Demersal Stocks in the North Sea and Skagerrak.
