Preparation of environmental samples for radiochemical assay: An overview

S.M. Cogan and K.S. Leonard

The processes involved in the preparation of environmental samples for radiochemical assay are an integral part of the measurement process. It is necessary for analysts to demonstrate to customers directly, or indirectly via an official accreditation organisation, the quality of their procedures.

It is therefore quite surprising, given the requirement for quality, that little information has been published recently in the open literature concerning the precursor to radio-assay, prior to chemical or physical methodologies. Nevertheless, the requirements for preparation and their procedures therein should not be neglected and should be thoroughly considered as part of the analytical scheme. This paper is intended to give an overview of the approaches, rationales and practices of an environmental preparation service.
