The paper outlines the monitoring programme mounted by MAFF following the spill in February 1996 in order to assess the resources at risk, and the consequent fishery closure measures initiated under the Food and Environment Protection Act (1985). The subsequent gradual easing of restrictions and re-opening of fisheries in the affected area is also described. The wider work programme under the auspices of SEEEC (the Sea Empress Environmental Evaluation Committee) to assess the broader impact on other marine species is described, and the likely impact on fish and shellfish stocks in the longer-term outlined from current knowledge
