This case study describes the identification of important estrogenic and androgenic compounds in STW effluents discharged directly to the marine environment. Two effluents characterized for estrogen receptor agonists were found to contain 17β -estradiol, androsterone, nonylphenol, (tentatively) bis(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate and an unknown estrogenic compound(s). Most of the activity contained in these samples was due to 17β -estradiol. Characterization of an effluent for androgen receptor agonists identified dehydrotestosterone, androstenedione, androstanedione, 5ß-androstane-3a,11ß-diol-17-one, androsterone, and epi-androsterone as responsible for 99 % of the in vitro activity determined in the effluent.
