The development of offshore wind farms around the coasts of England and Wales could make a significant contribution to securing energy supplies for future generations. However, while knowledge of wind farm impacts is developing all the time, there are still some uncertainties about the impacts of wind farms on the environment and specific industries whose activities may be affected by their development. Cognitive mapping was used as a tool in the dialogue between fishers and researchers in a study that investigates the socio-economic impacts and opportunities arising from wind farm developments. Cognitive mapping helped fishers to express their knowledge and perceptions of impacts in a structured way that facilitated a comprehensive and transparent understanding of the issues and concerns of fishers. Specific consideration of possible options to minimise the impacts of developments during construction and operation phases highlight the thought process behind fishers’ adaptation to management actions.
