Big changes on the way: a marine strategy for Europe

S. Jennings

When you think of European territory you might think of the Alps or the Pyrénées. But, in fact, half the territory of Europe is under the sea, and harbours a huge diversity of habitats and species ranging from cold-water coral reefs and vast seagrass meadows, to the biggest animal on the planet, the blue whale.

Unfortunately, as is the case in many other areas, Europe’s seas are increasingly under pressure from climate change, fishing, shipping, oil and gas exploration, sand and gravel extraction, coastal development, and atmospheric and land-based pollution. Recognising these pressures, the 6th Environment Action Programme of the European Commission (EC) called for the development of a thematic strategy for the protection and conservation of the European marine environment. The overall aim of this strategy is "to promote sustainable use of the seas and conserve marine ecosystems".
