This work describes two simple modifications that were made to the existing square mesh panel, currently required under EU legislation, and which are used throughout the North Sea Nephrops trawl fisheries. These modified square mesh panels were tested onboard a commercial twin rig trawler in the Farn Deeps Nephrops fishery during the winter 05/06 fishery and reduced discards (i.e. catches of below MLS juvenile cod, haddock and whiting) by around 50% in number. The modified panels were as follows:
- A 3m long colour contrasting secondary square mesh panel in a position 4.4-7.4 m behind the fishing circle
- Replacing the existing legislated 3m long square mesh panel with a similar sized panel, constructed from a colour contrasting high tensile strength, low diameter knotless twine
