Over the past 2-3 years records of short-snouted seahorse Hippocampus hippocampus (Linnaeus 1758) have been increasing in the central North Sea. Most notably in 2006 individuals were recovered from the Dogger Bank (54°11’ N, 01°00’E) and the coast of Germany (54°13'N 08°30'E). These records represent the northern-most observations for this species in over 100 years. Historic observations of this species in the North Sea (UK, Germany, Belgium and Netherlands) have been collated and are discussed here.
