Metabolic changes during hepatic tumorigenesis revealed by NMR-based metabolomics and metabolic correlational networks

Histopathologically well-characterised fish liver was analysed by 800 MHz 1H NMR metabolomics to identify metabolic changes associated with tumourigenesis. Data were analysed by multivariate statistics and metabolic correlation networks, and results revealed elevated anaerobic metabolism and reduced choline metabolism in tumour tissue. Negative correlations were observed between alanine-acetate (p=3.00x10-5) and between proline-acetate (p=0.003) in tumours only, suggesting alanine and proline are utilised as alternative energy sources during liver tumourigenesis.
