Welfare in wild-capture marine fisheries

J.D. Metcalfe

In contrast to terrestrial farming or aquaculture, little if any welfare regulation exists that constrains how fish are handled or killed in wild-capture marine fisheries. Given that welfare in wild-capture fisheries is likely to move further up the public agenda, an unbiased, dispassionate account of what happens to fish caught in wild-capture marine fisheries is needed so as to identify where the main animal welfare issues exist.
