Climate change and red mullet

The high market value of red mullet, its potentially increasing presence in northern parts of its distribution range in response to warming climate, in combination with the likelihood of a more targeted fishery for the species in the future, make this non-quota species a highly relevant case study in the context of climate change and fishery management. It is of note that this species has a relatively fast growth rate and a planktonic egg life-phase, which may make it more capable to rapidly respond to climate warming by colonising new habitats. The availability of some historical data for the species will enable analyses of longer-term data sets to be undertaken, which could shed light to what extent northward range expansions of red mullet are a common phenomenon of warmer periods, or are specific to the significant warming that is currently taking place.
