Title
Evaluation of Silicone Rubber Passive Samplers for the Determination of Freely Dissolved BFRs in UK Transitional and Coastal Waters
Publication Abstract

Monitoring for priority pollutants is an integral part of the UK obligations under the Water Framework Directive (WFD) and OSPAR monitoring programmes. It is likely also to be a requirement under the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD), which requires that concentrations of contaminants are not giving rise to pollution effects. Passive samplers offer an alternative way to measure chemical concentrations in the environment and thus potential exposure compared to traditional spot sampling. The results obtained can provide time integrated exposures, and can also give a measure of availability of contaminants to organisms. Additionally, passive samplers can concentrate contaminants which otherwise cannot be detected in the marine environment due to their low solubility or their low levels.

A survey concerned with hazardous substances on the OSPAR list of chemicals for Priority Action and the WFD list of priority substance was undertaken by UK governmental agencies around England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland using silicone rubber passive samplers previously assessed in the ICES passive sampling trial survey. The samplers were deployed in transitional and coastal waters in 38 locations for periods of time ranging from 41 to 62 days. The silicone rubbers were extracted exhaustively by Soxhlet extraction and extracts were subsequently analysed for a variety of contaminants, including brominated flame retardants (BFRs). PBDEs were determined using GC-NICI while HBCD and TBPP-A were determined by LC-MS. This element of the survey provides a record of baseline BFRs data in the UK marine environment using silicone rubber passive samplers which will contribute to an evaluation of the potential use of passive samplers for future monitoring requirements.
