Directed management of shellfish hygiene statutory monitoring programmes, management of sewage and sewerage improvement programmes and the investigation of associated water quality problems all require the estimation of the impact of potentially impacting sources on the shellfisheries. This would dictate the availability of a water quality model for each harvesting area. Construction of large-scale hydrodynamic models is both time-consuming and expensive and they have only been established for a small number of harvesting areas in England and Wales. These models are also not necessarily available for use by the appropriate government agencies. The applicability of a range of off-the-shelf modelling packages was investigated and one package, HydroTrackTM, selected for detailed assessment. The hydrodynamic model was set up for three harvesting areas and detailed assessment was undertaken for one area. Bacterial decay could not be accommodated in the model and so was introduced by means of a separate post-modelling module. The output from the modelling was compared with water quality and shellfish monitoring data from the area. The results of the assessment are presented together with a review of the outstanding difficulties associated with the use of such models. The associated resource requirements are also discussed.
