Approximately 80% of 6 - 8oz. fish showed typical spore infestation. Mortalities not reported. Primarily a disease of pond reared salmonids, especially rainbow trout. Life cycle includes oligochaete worms in which the infective stage to fish is produced
Histology revealed spores of M. cerebralis in the head cartilage associated with necrosis of the cartilage. Minimal inflammation and fibrosis present.
